The Torres Vedras Jewish Community Interpretation Centre is a municipal museum space dedicated to the documented Jewish history of Torres Vedras. It is located at Largo Padre Jacinto Pio Sobreiro, in the historic centre of the town, near the castle and close to the area of the former Judiaria.
Jewish Community Interpretation Centre
The centre was inaugurated on 18 May 2017. It is an initiative of the Municipality of Torres Vedras and was produced under the scientific supervision of the Cátedra de Estudos Sefarditas Alberto Benveniste, from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon.
The exhibition presents the Jewish presence in Portugal and in Torres Vedras from the medieval period to the forced conversion of Portuguese Jews. It includes documentary material such as contracts, royal letters, and letters of pardon. These sources help frame the legal, social, and communal organization of the local Jewish population.
Judiaria, Families, and Daily Life
One section of the exhibition reconstructs the Judiaria of Torres Vedras and identifies families, names, professions, and aspects of daily life. Special attention is given to the Guedelha family, connected to Torres Vedras and to the royal arrabiado. Among its members was D. Judas Guedelha, who served as rabi-mor under King Dinis.
The centre also presents the urban memory of the former Jewish quarter, including the area associated with the synagogue and the later transformation of that space into the Celeiros de Santa Maria.
Forced Conversion and Inquisition
The exhibition addresses the forced conversion of Jews into New Christians, denunciations of Judaizing practices, and the impact of the Inquisition in Torres Vedras. The centre includes a memorial to local victims of the Inquisition.
The visit is complemented by an urban route through places associated with the former Jewish community of Torres Vedras. Within this framework, the Torres Vedras Jewish Community Interpretation Centre functions as the main public institution for reading the town’s Jewish documentation, urban memory, and post-1497 history.
