The Shaaré Pideon Synagogue was the twentieth-century synagogue of Bragança, located on the former Rua Direita, today Rua dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra. It belonged to the modern attempt to rebuild public Jewish life in the city after centuries in which Jewish identity had often survived through New Christian families, hidden practice, and crypto-Jewish memory.
Shaaré Pideon and the Obra do Resgate
The Jewish Community of Bragança was formally established on 18 October 1927. Its synagogue, named Shaaré Pideon, meaning Gates of Redemption, was inaugurated on 22 June 1928. The initiative was connected to the Obra do Resgate of Portuguese Marranos, led from Porto by Captain Artur Carlos de Barros Basto, also known as Abraham Israel Ben-Rosh.
A Public Jewish Room
The synagogue functioned in a rear room on the first floor of number 25. The space contained built-in cupboards used to keep sacred books, ritual objects, garments, and ornaments for religious services. Exterior signs identified the Comunidade Israelita de Bragança and displayed the Shema on the façade.
Shaaré Pideon was therefore not only a private memory or domestic practice. It was a visible Jewish institution. The site had prayer, religious instruction, public ceremonies, visitors from the wider Jewish world, and a small Israelite school inaugurated in 1932. Contemporary accounts also record lectures, communal celebrations, and the presence of Jews and crypto-Jews from different social backgrounds.
Decline and Later Memory
The community began to decline during the 1930s, under social pressure, internal difficulties, financial strain, fear of public identification, and the wider crisis of the Marrano rescue movement. The official books of the Jewish Community of Bragança run until 31 March 1941. This suggests that the community had largely ceased to function formally by that time.
Even so, the synagogue did not disappear immediately. Sources indicate that a rented room was still used occasionally as a synagogue in Bragança until at least 1960. Barros Basto died in 1961, after the movement he had led had already lost much of its institutional force.
Shaaré Pideon Synagogue is important because it marks the twentieth-century reconstruction, visibility, and decline of Jewish life in Bragança. A groove where a mezuzah was placed is still reported on the granite doorpost of the former synagogue building.
