Rosas da Galileia is a small commemorative rose garden inside Jardim da Estrela, in Lisbon. Its historical value is not in the scale of the site, but in the public gesture recorded by its plaque.
A gift from northern Israel
The ceramic plaque is dated 17 October 1989. Its inscription states that the roses came from the mountains of the northern Holy Land and were offered by the People of Israel to the people of Lisbon.
Friendship and sympathy
The dedication describes the gift as a symbol of friendship and sympathy. At that date, Lisbon City Council was presided over by Nuno Krus Abecasis, who served as mayor of Lisbon between 1980 and 1990.
