Praça Rodrigues Lobo / Francisco Rodrigues Lobo Statue marks the public memory of Francisco Rodrigues Lobo, one of the most important Portuguese writers of the early seventeenth century. The square is the main urban square of Leiria and preserves the name of a poet born in the city, probably in the area of Rua da Água, today Rua Comandante João Belo.

New Christian Memory

Rodrigues Lobo was a New Christian. His life belongs to the period after the forced conversion of the Jews in Portugal in 1497, when families of Jewish origin lived under the permanent suspicion of the Holy Office. Municipal sources also record that his brother was later the subject of an inquisitorial process.

This connection explains why Praça Rodrigues Lobo / Francisco Rodrigues Lobo Statue is included in Leiria’s Jewish Quarter Trail. The site does not mark a medieval Jewish building, but it preserves the memory of a major literary figure whose family background belonged to the post-conversion history of Portuguese Jews and New Christians.

Rodrigues Lobo and Leiria

Rodrigues Lobo studied Law at the University of Coimbra, completing his training in 1602. Even so, his literary identity remained closely tied to Leiria. The rivers Lis and Lena, together with the surrounding fields and valleys, appear repeatedly in his pastoral writing.

His main works include A Primavera, O Pastor Peregrino, O Desenganado, and Corte na Aldeia. Through these works, Rodrigues Lobo became one of the central figures of Portuguese literature in the transition from the late Renaissance to the Baroque.

The square contains a statue of Francisco Rodrigues Lobo by the sculptor Joaquim Correia. The monument functions as a public tribute to the poet in the city that preserved his name and incorporated his memory into the historical route of Leiria’s former Jewish quarter.
