The Museu Judaico / Museu Marrano de Carção is a local museum dedicated to the New Christian, Marrano, and crypto-Jewish memory of Carção, in the municipality of Vimioso. Its creation was promoted by the Associação Cultural dos Almocreves de Carção, with support from the Junta de Freguesia de Carção and the Câmara Municipal de Vimioso. In 2010, works were announced for the recovery of a ruined house intended to house the museum.

Carção and the Almocreves

The name of the association is itself part of the local historical landscape. Almocreves were muleteers, carriers, and small-scale transporters who moved goods across inland regions. In Trás-os-Montes, this type of mobility was closely connected to rural exchange, trade routes, markets, and the circulation of products between villages and towns. For this reason, the name does not refer only to transport. It also evokes a practical world of movement, commerce, and regional connection.

Within this framework, the Museu Judaico / Museu Marrano de Carção should not be read as a preserved synagogue or as a single monumental Jewish building. Its importance lies in the preservation of local memory through materials, names, prayers, domestic objects, and references connected to New Christian and crypto-Jewish families from Carção.

Marrano Memory and Religious Life

The museum includes two main areas: one for temporary exhibitions and another for the permanent presentation of Marrano trades and religious life. Its collection brings together epigraphic materials and household objects associated with local crypto-Jewish memory.

One of the highlighted pieces is a stone lintel with a carved Lion of Judah, recovered from a ruined building. The museum also gives special attention to a significant collection of prayers associated with the Jews of Carção, dated in the sources to the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. These materials are important because they point to forms of religious memory preserved outside formal Jewish institutions.

Inquisition and Local Names

Inside the museum, a memorial lists inhabitants of Carção who were arrested and penitenced by the Inquisition. This is one of the strongest elements of the site. It connects local family memory to documented persecution and places Carção within the wider history of New Christians in Trás-os-Montes.

For this reason, the Museu Judaico / Museu Marrano de Carção is relevant not because it preserves a single monumental structure, but because it gathers fragments of a difficult historical continuity: domestic practice, remembered prayers, material traces, and names marked by inquisitorial repression.
