The Mikveh of Coimbra is one of the most important material testimonies of medieval Jewish life in Portugal. Discovered in 2013 at Rua Visconde da Luz, 21, it is located within the territory of Coimbra’s Judiaria Velha, the city’s first Jewish quarter. The site was officially opened to the public on 18 May 2026, after conservation, restoration, research, and museumization work led by the Municipality of Coimbra.

The Mikveh and the Judiaria Velha

The Mikveh of Coimbra stands in the area historically associated with the old Jewish quarter, close to Rua Corpo de Deus, Rua Martins de Carvalho, formerly Rua das Figueirinhas, and Rua Visconde da Luz, formerly Rua do Coruche. This location matters because Coimbra’s medieval Jewish community is documented from the twelfth century and developed the essential institutions of organized Jewish life: synagogue, ritual baths, cemetery, butcher’s space, and albergaria.

The structure was identified inside a later building of ordinary nineteenth-century appearance. Beneath that exterior, however, the site preserves a much older and more complex ritual space. It is associated with a partially anthropized natural karst cavity, a natural water source, and architectural features that strongly support its identification as a Jewish purification bath.

Archaeology, Water and Jewish Law

The Mikveh of Coimbra is not simply an old water structure. In Jewish tradition, a mikveh depends on specific ritual requirements concerning the gathering and use of natural water. For this reason, its identification matters both archaeologically and religiously.

The evidence strongly supports the interpretation of the Coimbra structure as a mikveh. Its location within the Judiaria Velha, the presence of a natural water source, the rock-cut structure, the preparation chamber, the immersion pool accessed by steps, and its certification by the Comunidade Israelita de Lisboa all reinforce its reading as a Jewish ritual bath.

This gives the site exceptional importance within the Portuguese context. Medieval Jewish material remains in Portugal are often fragmentary, disputed, or preserved mainly through documents and toponyms. Here, however, Jewish life is visible through architecture, water, ritual function, and urban context.

Museumization and Jewish Continuity

The museumization of the Mikveh of Coimbra also raises a broader question about how Jewish heritage is presented today. A medieval mikveh is not only an archaeological structure. It is a ritual space rooted in Jewish law, Jewish memory, and Jewish communal life. Therefore, its public presentation should not reduce it to a historical object disconnected from the living tradition that created it.

In this context, the absence of a mezuzah at the public entrance becomes symbolically relevant. From a strictly halakhic perspective, a mikveh itself is not automatically obligated in mezuzah, and a museumized archaeological site is not the same as a Jewish home or active communal building. Even so, the question is not only legal. It is also cultural and communal. A mezuzah at the threshold would mark the site as part of a Jewish historical landscape and would make visible that Jewish heritage is not only a memory of disappearance.

This is especially important in Portugal, where many Jewish places are preserved as traces of absence but rarely connected to Jewish continuity. The Mikveh of Coimbra can do more than explain what once existed. If interpreted with care, it can also strengthen Jewish education, identity, and communal connection today.
