The Memorial e Centro de Documentação Bragança Sefardita is one of the main spaces dedicated to Sephardic memory in Bragança. Inaugurated in 2017, it complements the Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Sefardita do Nordeste Transmontano, but with a distinct focus. Its route brings the visitor closer to Jewish religious life, family memory, ritual practice, and documentary preservation.
Memorial e Centro de Documentação Bragança Sefardita
The Memorial presents Jewish life through elements central to Sephardic identity: prayer, the Torah, family life, the place of women, rites, festivals, and the Jewish calendar. Its route begins with a contemporary synagogue or worship space created for religious, educational, and interpretive use.
This point requires precision. The synagogue inside the Memorial is not a preserved medieval synagogue. It is also not evidence of an uninterrupted Jewish community on the site. Its value is different. It gives visible form to Jewish religious culture in a city where Jewish presence was long marked by forced conversion, secrecy, and silence.
Ritual Life and Family Memory
The exhibition gives particular importance to daily and domestic Sephardic life. Instead of treating Jewish history only through persecution, it also presents the gestures, rhythms, and rituals that shaped family and communal identity.
This approach matters in Bragança. In the Northeast Transmontano, much of Jewish memory did not survive through monumental buildings. It survived through names, domestic practices, oral traces, inquisitorial records, and memories transmitted across generations.
Documentation and Sephardic Memory
The Memorial also functions as a centre of documentation. Its upper floor includes an archive of memories and an online documentation centre dedicated to the Sephardic presence in the Bragança region. Residents, descendants, and members of the Sephardic diaspora are invited to contribute testimonies, photographs, letters, genealogies, and other material or immaterial records.
The Memorial e Centro de Documentação Bragança Sefardita is therefore not only an exhibition space. It is a place where Jewish religious culture, family memory, and historical documentation are brought together. In a region shaped by New Christian identity and crypto-Jewish survival, its role is to recover, organize, and transmit fragments of Sephardic life that persecution tried to erase.
