The Jewish Museum of Castelo de Vide is the main public space in the town dedicated to Jewish and New Christian history. It is located inside the former Judiaria, near the junction of Rua da Judiaria and Rua da Fonte, in the area traditionally associated with the medieval Jewish quarter.

The Jewish Museum of Castelo de Vide and Its Formation

The building was acquired by the Municipality of Castelo de Vide after private restoration works revealed a wall niche later interpreted as a possible Aron Ha-Kodesh, or Hechal. After archaeological sondages and museum preparation, the space opened as a museum nucleus in April 2009.

The museum presents the history of the Jewish community of Castelo de Vide, the urban memory of the Judiaria, and the transition to New Christian status after the forced conversions. The exhibition includes archaeological materials recovered during restoration and consolidation works, together with interpretive materials connected to Jewish religious life and local memory.

Archaeological Caution and Museum Narrative

The wall niche interpreted as a possible Hechal is part of the museum narrative. However, it should be treated with caution. Archaeological work carried out in 2006 did not securely confirm the building’s medieval religious function.

The upper floor preserves pointed-arch doors and a doorpost with a concavity interpreted as a possible mezuzah mark. The building underwent significant alterations in the sixteenth century and was later adapted for residential use in the eighteenth century.
