In the old urban area of Bragança, in a place not securely identified today, there functioned a local commissariat of the Holy Office, associated with a preventive prison. The Inquisition Commissariat of Bragança was not a tribunal. Bragança did not have its own inquisitorial court. The main tribunal responsible for the region was the Tribunal of Coimbra, with some cases also connected to Évora.

Local Structure of the Holy Office

The strongest documented window of inquisitorial action in Bragança runs from 1580 to 1755. Published research records 1,601 people connected to the city who were processed by the tribunals of Coimbra and Évora, mainly under accusations related to Judaism.

The local commissariat belonged to the first stages of inquisitorial control. It could receive denunciations, examine suspicions, assist arrests, hold suspects temporarily, and organize the transfer of prisoners to the tribunal responsible for their case.

Preventive Prison and Transfers

The preventive prison of Bragança was not the main prison of the Coimbra tribunal. It functioned locally, before prisoners were sent to the central court. Its role was therefore practical and administrative: detention, custody, and preparation for transfer.

The importance of the Inquisition Commissariat of Bragança lies in this local function. It shows that inquisitorial persecution was not limited to the great tribunals. In a city with a large New Christian population, the Holy Office also depended on local structures capable of watching, arresting, and moving people accused of secretly preserving Jewish beliefs and practices.
