The Fonte dos Judeus, later known as Fonte Nova, is one of the key urban markers for understanding the medieval Jewish topography of Coimbra. Its earliest references are associated with the twelfth century, when the area around the old Jewish quarter appeared in documents connected to the boundaries of Santa Cruz. The name Fonte dos Judeus reflects this older setting, linked to the Judiaria Velha and to the area near the beginning of the Couraça dos Apóstolos.
A Boundary of the Judiaria Velha
The importance of the Fonte dos Judeus is not that it preserves a medieval Jewish ritual structure. It was a public fountain, not a mikveh or synagogue. Its value lies in the way it helps identify the limits and circulation routes of the old Jewish quarter. Municipal archaeological documentation places Rua da Fonte Nova within the medieval Judiaria and connects the original Fonte dos Judeus with the eastern end of the main street of that Jewish suburb.
From Fonte dos Judeus to Fonte Nova
The fountain visible today is later. The name Fonte Nova became associated with the remodeling carried out in 1725, when the fountain was also moved to a nearby location. After further relocations, its present urban setting was completed in 1986. Therefore, the monument must be read with caution: the current structure is not a direct medieval survival, but it preserves the memory of an older Jewish place-name and its relation to Coimbra’s medieval urban fabric.
Jewish Memory in the City
Today, the Fonte dos Judeus / Fonte Nova remains important because it anchors Jewish memory in the physical city. It shows how medieval Jewish presence can survive not only through buildings, cemeteries, or ritual spaces, but also through names, limits, streets, and public infrastructure. In this sense, the Fonte dos Judeus is a modest but meaningful witness to the former Judiaria Velha de Coimbra.
