Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Judaica Isaac Cardoso

"Opened in 2012 in Trancoso’s former Judiaria, this centre preserves Jewish memory through exhibitions, a 515-name Inquisition memorial and Beit Mayim Hayim."

Opened in 2012, the Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Judaica Isaac Cardoso is the main public institution in Trancoso dedicated to the town’s Jewish and New Christian history. It stands inside the former Judiaria and is named after Fernando Isaac Cardoso, the Trancoso-born New Christian who later became a Jewish physician, philosopher, and author in exile.

Isaac Cardoso Centre and Its Foundation

The project was promoted by the Municipality of Trancoso and inaugurated on 20 October 2012, during the III Festival Internacional da Memória Sefardita. The architectural design was developed by Gonçalo Byrne Arquitectos together with Oficina Ideias em Linha, with Gonçalo Byrne and José Laranjeira as the responsible architects.

The centre was built on a small triangular plot in the historic centre, at the junction of Rua do Poço dos Mestres and Travessa do Poço do Mestre. Its architecture was conceived as a contemporary intervention within the historic fabric of the old Jewish quarter.

Jewish Memory and the Inquisition

The exhibition presents the Jewish presence in Trancoso, the former Judiaria, New Christian families, and the impact of the Portuguese Inquisition. One of its main elements is the memorial wall with the 515 names of people from Trancoso imprisoned by the Inquisition.

This memorial dimension gives the centre a direct connection to local documentary memory. It does not present Jewish history only through urban tradition, but also through names, persecution records, and the long afterlife of forced conversion in the region.

Beit Mayim Hayim Synagogue

The building also houses the synagogue Beit Mayim Hayim, meaning House of Living Waters. In 2013, the centre received a Sefer Torah, marking the return of a Torah scroll to Trancoso more than five centuries after the decree of King Manuel I in 1496 and the forced conversions of 1497.

Today, the Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Judaica Isaac Cardoso brings together interpretation, memorialization, and religious space in the area historically associated with Trancoso’s Jewish quarter.
