The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vitória, also known as the Ermida do Corpo de Deus, stands in the area of Coimbra’s former Judiaria Velha. Its Jewish relevance does not come from being a Jewish building, but from its location within a space once connected to medieval Jewish communal life.
The chapel is associated with Rua Corpo de Deus and Largo de Nossa Senhora da Vitória. Archaeological work in this area identified medieval structures, dated between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, some of which have been interpreted as possibly connected with Coimbra’s medieval synagogue.
The name Corpo de Deus belongs to a Christian devotional tradition linked to accusations of desecrated consecrated hosts, a type of anti-Jewish narrative known in medieval Europe. This tradition must be treated with caution. It is not evidence of Jewish practice. Rather, it reflects how Christian memory later reinterpreted a former Jewish urban space.
Today, the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vitória / Corpo de Deus is important as a marker of historical transformation. It helps show how part of Coimbra’s Judiaria Velha was absorbed into Christian devotional memory after the medieval Jewish presence had been displaced.
