Beit Mayim Hayim Synagogue

"Contemporary synagogue inside the Isaac Cardoso Centre, created for Jewish visitors, ceremonies, education and memorial visibility."

The Beit Mayim Hayim Synagogue is the contemporary synagogue inside the Centro de Interpretação da Cultura Judaica Isaac Cardoso, in Trancoso’s former Judiaria. Its name means House of Living Waters.

Foundation and Function

The synagogue forms part of the centre inaugurated in 2012 by the Municipality of Trancoso. It was created as a space for Jewish visitors, ceremonies, education, and public religious visibility.

It does not serve a resident Jewish community in Trancoso. Its role is therefore mainly institutional, educational, ceremonial, and symbolic.

Return of the Sefer Torah

In 2013, the centre received a Sefer Torah, marking the return of a Torah scroll to Trancoso more than five centuries after the decree of King Manuel I in 1496 and the forced conversions of 1497.

This event gave the Beit Mayim Hayim Synagogue a specific religious and memorial importance within the contemporary recovery of Jewish visibility in Trancoso.

Interior and Symbolic Design

The synagogue is described as a small space for Jewish worship. Its interior is made mainly of wood, in contrast with the granite architecture of the building.

The design includes four columns associated with the Matriarchs of Israel and a ceiling composition linked to the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
